Mom & Pop shops that stay open through the night create a sense of connectedness. The owners, who devote both day and night to their stores, offer a comforting presence. Pedestrians feel safe and welcomed as they pass by, drawn to the warm glow and the quiet reassurance of human activity in the stillness of the night. On a late evening walk through the old town of Shangri-La I was drawn to the inviting glow and atmosphere of this particular Mom & Pop shop which beautifully illuminated its surroundings.
